What is 'idling'? How does it work?

Idling shows you how long a vehicle's engine keeps running while the vehicle isn't moving. It helps you spot unnecessary fuel use and get a clearer picture of driving habits across your fleet.

Idling happens when the ignition is on and the vehicle is not moving.

If the tracking device also sends engine RPM (revolutions per minute) data — like Mapon Expert and Teltonika devices — the check is more precise. In that case, idling only counts when the vehicle is stationary and the engine is actually running (not just when the ignition is on).

Idling only starts counting after the vehicle has been stopped with the engine running for a few minutes, to avoid counting short stops like waiting at a light or a quick stop at a barrier.


Where you'll find idling

Idling data shows up in a few different places across the platform:

  • Fleet efficiency – as the "Average daily idle time" metric.

  • Driving scores and driver ratings – as one of the parameters used to calculate them

  • PTO – used to tell idling apart from time spent running powered equipment

  • Accessory switches – can help you track and reduce idling

  • BLE Beacons Report – shown as one of the options to filter BLE scans according to the vehicle's status, alongside Stopped and Driving

  • Reports – several reports include idling data, like Daily vehicles overview, Work graph, Work times, Working summary, etc.
