How to customize your video storage rules

Updated over a week ago

Custom video retention gives you flexible control over how long videos are stored. You can keep important footage like incidents or flagged events longer, while automatically removing videos you no longer need.

As a bonus, retention rules also help support your company policies around privacy, safety, and compliance. It’s an easy way to manage storage, reduce clutter, and make sure the right videos are available when it matters.

Set up video retention rules

Choose how long different types of videos are kept in the storage, and let the system handle the rest. If needed, you can still change the retention for individual videos later— by using the rules you have set up. This gives you flexibility without extra manual work.

  1. Go to Cameras -> Events.

  2. Click the Settings button on the top right corner.

  3. Go to the "Retention Settings" tab.

  4. According to your company policies or preferences, click on each dropdown and set different retention times depending on the case:

    • Unsaved Events (New): Select after how much time should events with the 🔴"New" status be marked with the 🟣"Deleted" status

    • Standard Retention (Saved Events): Select after how much time should your events with the 🔵"Saved" status be marked with the 🟣"Deleted" status

    • Extended Retention (Exceptions): Select how much time should we keep stored those events that you have manually marked with "Extended retention"

    • Deleted Events Recovery Period: Select after how much time should we permanently delete those events have been marked as 🟣"Deleted"

  5. Click the "Save changes" button at the bottom.

Extended storage for videos

Saved events are kept according to your standard retention setting, but if a video needs to be stored for an extended period of time, you can make it an exception at any time directly from the video settings, giving you extra flexibility for important cases.

📘Pictures and non-video events cannot be marked as exceptions for extended retention time. If saved, they will always have the standard saved retention time.

From a video player

You can extend for how long you can

  1. Go to Cameras -> Events.

  2. Use the filters at the top to look for the saved event you need.

  3. Click on the video to start playing it.

  4. On the video player, click on the settings icon, and then "Data retention".

  5. Click on "Extended".

The amount of time it will stay stored will extend according to your data retention configuration of the "Extended Retention (Exceptions)" setting, learn more here.

From "Saved recordings"
