Basic and Starter packages: Live vs. Light Location — Volkswagen Group OEM

The Volkswagen Group OEM integration provides two package options with different location tracking capabilities.

This article explains what each package includes and the differences between Live Location and Light Location so you can understand which data is available for your vehicles.

🔔 By default, all Volkswagen Group OEM customers are enrolled in the Basic package. If you'd like to switch your fleet to the Starter package, please contact your account manager.

Live location vs. Light location

Live Location provides continuous vehicle tracking while the ignition is switched on. The vehicle's position is updated approximately every 30 seconds, allowing you to monitor its location and movements in near real time.

Light Location uses end-of-trip location updates instead of continuous live tracking. The vehicle's position is updated when it is stopped and the ignition is switched off.

Data frequency:

Live location

Location updated every 30 seconds while the ignition is on.

Light location

Location updated when vehicle is stopped and ignition is off.

Basic package

When adding vehicles in the integration, the vehicles will automatically be connected to our Basic package.

Includes:

Basic package

📘 The Basic package includes live vehicle location. However, not all vehicles can support live location (manufacturers limitation).

If a vehicle does not support live location data, the system will automatically use light location as a fallback.

🔔 A vehicle's capabilities are identified during enrollment, whether a vehicle will support live location or not, can only be known after the vehicle has been connected to the integration.

Starter package

It is also possible to switch to a lower tier Volkswagen Group's OEM integration.

The Starter package, which provides Light Location (instead of Live Location).

With this package, the vehicle's location is updated when it stops and the ignition is switched off.

📘 If you'd like to switch your fleet to the lower tier, Starter package, or learn more, please contact our Sales team or your account manager.

Questions about packages

Is it possible to have two different package tiers?

Your whole fleet can only have one package tier.

You can choose either the Basic package or the Starter package, and the selected tier will apply to all vehicles in your fleet.

If my vehicle does not support live location, will it be charged as the Starter package?

If your fleet uses the Basic package, all vehicles are billed under the Basic package, even if some vehicles do not support live location data, due to their hardware or manufacturer limitations.

For vehicles that do not support live location, the system automatically falls back to Light location (which provides location data when it's stopped and the ignition is off) but it will still be under the Basic package.

Package tiers are configured at the fleet level, so all vehicles in your fleet use the same package tier.
